  2. 2 Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode (top-right).
  3. 3 Click Load unpacked and select the unzipped extension folder.

Automatic rank tracking, completely free

One-click automatic

Paste your list, click Start, and each keyword's Google position is read and filled in for you — no tabs to babysit, no typing ranks by hand.

No API key, no cost

Unlike the API edition, there's nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay per keyword. It reads Google's normal results pages.

Precise location targeting

Search from an exact city — type it and pick from 34,000+ places worldwide — or drop a precise map pin. See rankings the way people actually searching from that spot see them, not a vague country average. And it doubles as a location changer: one tick pins all your own Google searches to that place until you turn it off.

Watch it happen

Watch mode runs every check in one visible tab and highlights your ranking result on the page in front of you — or switch to Background to run silently while you work.

Full-tab dashboard

Pop the tool out into its own browser tab for a roomy view of every keyword, its location, live rank and the ranking URL — all in one place.

Export to CSV

Copy the table for Sheets and Excel, or download a CSV with keyword, rank and status in one click.

100% local & private

Runs entirely on your computer. Keywords and results stay in your browser's extension storage — nothing is sent to SerpHammer.

Three ways to check rankings — pick your method

Same keyword list, three different engines under the hood. Log ranks manually, automate with your own API key, or install this free Chrome extension.

Manual

Bulk Keyword Search

Opens a real search tab per keyword; you read the result and type the rank.

  • Free, no key, no install
  • 100% private — nothing leaves your browser
  • Google, Bing, Yahoo & DuckDuckGo
  • You see exactly what a real visitor sees
  • You read and type each rank yourself
  • Slow for very large lists

API

Rank Checker (API)

Calls a SERP API with your own key and reads each ranking automatically.

  • Fully automatic rank numbers
  • Handles big lists hands-off
  • Country & language targeting
  • Reliable, ToS-compliant data
  • Needs a paid SERP API key (per-lookup cost)
  • Most providers need a tiny proxy (CORS)

  4. 4

    Run a check

Click the icon, paste your keywords (one per line), enter your domain, search for the exact city (or drop a map pin), choose Watch or Background, and hit Start check. Prefer more room? Click ⤢ Full tab to run it in its own dashboard tab. Watch positions fill in, then Copy or export CSV.

Good to know

Your data stays local

Keywords, domain and results live only in the extension's local storage on your machine. Nothing is uploaded to SerpHammer or any third party. The extension only reads the Google pages it opens — it never types or clicks.

Watch or background

Watch mode reuses one visible tab, navigating keyword to keyword so you see each check happen. Background mode opens a hidden tab per keyword and closes it. Either way, leave the window open while a run is in progress.

Batch sizes

Small to medium lists run smoothly. For very large lists, split them into batches — checking hundreds of keywords back-to-back can trigger a Google CAPTCHA. The extension already paces itself with a short delay between searches.

When ranks look off

Because it reads Google's HTML, a Google layout change can occasionally break detection until we ship an update. If accuracy for reporting matters, the API edition returns more consistent, ToS-compliant data.

Which browsers

Any Chromium browser: Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc all support Load unpacked with Manifest V3. Firefox uses a different extension format and isn't supported here.

Updating

When a new version ships, download the ZIP again, replace your folder's contents, and click the refresh icon on the extension card in chrome://extensions.

Frequently asked questions

How is the extension different from the manual and API tools?

The manual tool opens a search tab per keyword and you type the rank yourself. The API edition calls a paid SERP API with your own key. This extension is free and automatic: it opens each Google search in a background tab, reads your position straight from the results page, records it, and closes the tab. No API key and no per-lookup cost.

Is it free?

Yes. The extension is completely free and there is no per-keyword cost, because it reads Google's normal results pages instead of a paid API. You only pay with a little patience for large lists, since it paces requests to stay gentle on Google.

How do I install it?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked, and select the unzipped folder. The SerpHammer icon appears in your toolbar — click it to start a check.

Is it safe? What data does it collect?

It runs entirely on your computer. Your keywords, domain and results are stored only in your browser's local extension storage and are never sent to SerpHammer or any server. It only reads Google results pages it opens; it never types, clicks or submits anything.

Will Google block or CAPTCHA me?

For normal-sized lists, no. The extension paces searches with a short delay to look like ordinary browsing. If you check hundreds of keywords rapidly Google may show a CAPTCHA; if that happens, slow down, run smaller batches, or switch to the API edition which uses a compliant data provider.

Why might a rank look wrong or missing?

The extension reads Google's HTML, which Google changes often, so a layout change can occasionally break detection until the extension is updated. Personalization, location and CAPTCHAs can also affect results. For mission-critical reporting, the API edition returns more consistent, ToS-compliant data.
