    Tips & detailed help

    What "semantic grouping" means

    Two keywords can share no words yet mean the same thing — cheapest flights to tokyo and tokyo airfare deals. Semantic grouping clusters by the intent behind the words, which is why it beats a plain alphabetical or n-gram sort for planning content.

    Getting a free Gemini key

    Open Google AI Studio → API keys, create a key, and paste it in. Gemini's free tier is generous enough for most keyword lists. The default model is gemini-2.5-flash, which is fast and cheap; pick another from the Model dropdown, or click My models to load exactly what your key can call if you hit a "model not found" error.

    Using a Mistral key

    Create a key at console.mistral.ai and pick a model from the dropdown — mistral-small-latest and open-mistral-nemo are on the free tier, mistral-large-latest is the highest quality. Not sure what your key covers? Click My models to load the exact list it can call.

    Min group size & granularity

    Min group size tells the model how many queries a cluster needs before it's worth keeping — raise it to avoid tiny one-off groups. Granularity trades breadth for precision: Broad makes a few large themes, Fine splits them into tighter sub-intents.

    How uploads are read

    For a .txt file each line is one query. For a .csv the first column of each row is used (the common "keyword, volume, difficulty" layout), and an obvious header row like keyword is skipped. Everything is de-duplicated as it's added.

    Keeping your key safe

    Uncheck Remember on this device to keep the key only for the session (it's wiped when you close the browser); leave it on to save it for next time. Use the eye button to check what you pasted, and Forget to wipe it. The key only ever goes to your chosen provider — the page's security policy blocks anywhere else. Use a personal device and rotate the key from your provider's dashboard if in doubt.

    Is the Semantic Query Grouper free to use?

    Yes. The tool itself is completely free and runs in your browser with no sign-up. You only supply your own AI provider API key. Both supported providers — Google Gemini and Mistral — have generous free tiers, so you can typically run it at no cost.

    Do I need an API key, and which providers are supported?

    Yes — the grouping is done by an AI model, so you paste your own key from one of two providers: Google Gemini (free tier via AI Studio) or Mistral (free tier). Pick a model from the dropdown, or click My models to load exactly the models your key supports. You can switch provider or model between runs.

    Where is my API key stored? Is it safe?

    Your key never leaves your browser except to go straight to the AI provider you pick, over HTTPS — it is never sent to SerpHammer, because there is no backend. You choose how it is kept: leave Remember on this device on to store it for next time, or turn it off to keep it only until you close the browser. A show/hide button reveals it and a Forget button wipes it anytime. When the page is served over the web, its Content-Security-Policy blocks the key from being sent to any site other than your chosen provider. Use a personal, trusted device.

    How many keywords can I group at once?

    You can paste or upload thousands of queries. Very large lists depend on the context window and rate limits of the model you pick, so for lists over a few hundred keywords use a capable model and expect a longer run. Every query you submit is accounted for — anything the model does not place is collected into an Ungrouped bucket so nothing is silently dropped.

    Can I export the grouped queries?

    Yes. After grouping you can copy all groups to your clipboard as plain text, or download a CSV with Group, Intent and Query columns that opens directly in Google Sheets or Excel for your content briefs and site structure.

    Does it work offline?

    The app installs as a PWA and its interface, help and CSV export work offline. The grouping step itself needs an internet connection because it calls your chosen AI provider's API. Everything else stays on your device.

    The story behind this tool

    The Semantic Query Grouper started as a prototype that Prateik built in Google AI Studio — a small React app that used Gemini to cluster a messy keyword list into intent groups. It solved a real, repetitive SEO chore: turning a raw export from a rank tracker into the content clusters and site structure you actually plan around. He wanted it handy for everyday work, so we brought it into SerpHammer.

    From that prototype we rebuilt it as a proper SerpHammer tool — a static, installable, privacy-first app with a provider picker (Gemini or Mistral), bring-your-own-key security, a "nothing gets lost" completeness guard, CSV export, and saved lists — while keeping Prateik's original idea intact. His prototype is preserved untouched in the project as the tool's origin.
